A new space for family language time

Many diaspora families want to pass on African languages, but the resources available are often limited, generic, or disconnected from the stories and everyday experiences of children growing up between cultures. For parents who speak Kirundi at home but struggle to find age-appropriate, engaging books in the language, the gap can feel especially wide.

This new Kirundi-English bilingual book series was created to close that gap. Each book pairs accessible English with Kirundi so children can follow the story, build vocabulary, and hear their home language in a natural rhythm. The goal is not to turn story time into a lesson, but to make language learning feel like connection.

Built for real family routines

The series was designed with diaspora life in mind. The stories are warm, contemporary, and rooted in familiar moments—reading together on the couch, asking questions about the pictures, and sharing small discoveries. The bilingual format helps children connect words across both languages without feeling like they are choosing one over the other.

The design is simple and inviting, with clear layouts and visual cues that support comprehension. The stories also celebrate cultural details—family, community, food, music, and everyday life—so children can see their heritage represented with pride.

How to use the books at home

A short, consistent routine works better than a long occasional session. Try:

  1. Read the same story together a few times a week.
  2. Pause to ask simple questions in both languages: "What do you see?" / "Umwihariko w'iki?"
  3. Let your child repeat a phrase or word from the story.
  4. Encourage them to retell one part in either language.
  5. Keep it relaxed—curiosity matters more than perfect pronunciation.

The most important thing is to make the books part of a shared ritual, not a test.

A bridge between generations

Language is not just vocabulary. It is the way we tell stories, comfort each other, and pass down memory. This series is a small but meaningful step toward helping African families keep that thread alive.

If you are a parent or caregiver, start with one book and one conversation. Over time, those small moments can become a lasting bridge between generations.

Each story in the series has been crafted with care, using familiar settings and relatable characters to help children connect emotionally. By providing both languages side by side, we aim to reduce the cognitive load and make the learning process feel more like play than study. This approach encourages repeated reading, which reinforces vocabulary naturally over time.

You don't need to be fluent in Kirundi to support your child. Every page is a chance to learn together, make mistakes, and grow. Even a few words repeated with warmth can help your child feel the rhythm of the language and the closeness of shared time.
