Feelings in Kirundi

Feelings in Kirundi are expressed as full sentences, not single words. Ndashonje means I am hungry. Ndanyotewe means I am thirsty. Ndarwaye means I am sick. This feelings in Kirundi lesson covers 16 sentences — all the states a child might need to name during the day — each recorded by a native speaker.

The structure is consistent: every sentence starts with nda and ends with the feeling. Once a child hears two or three of them, the pattern is clear. The three to teach first are the ones that come up every day: ndashonje (I'm hungry), ndanyotewe (I'm thirsty), and ndarushe (I'm tired). A child who can say those three can already communicate across most of the day.

Lionel Kubwimana, a native Kirundi speaker from Bujumbura, recorded every sentence. Play the audio before reading the Kirundi — the vowel length in ndamaramaye (I'm embarrassed) and ndashavuye (I'm angry) is easier to hear than to guess from the spelling.

Ask your child how they feel in Kirundi at moments that make sense: before a meal (ndashonje?), after play (ndarushe?), when they do not want to go somewhere (ndashavuye?). The sentence sticks when the feeling is real.

The full list covers more than daily basics: ndahimbawe (I'm proud), ndashashaye (I'm excited), ndamaramaye (I'm embarrassed), ndafise isoni (I'm shy). These come up less often, but a child who knows them has the language to describe situations that are otherwise hard to explain.

The premium course adds a practice game so a child can work through all 16 feelings independently, with score tracking across sessions.

These are the sentences a Kirundi-speaking family uses to say how they feel — not a vocabulary list but ready-to-use phrases. A parent who is not yet fluent can still use this lesson: ask the question, wait for the response, and play Lionel Kubwimana's recording so your child hears the correct form. This lesson is for any parent raising a child with Kirundi at home, wherever that home is.
