Where Are Things? in Swahili
Location phrases in Swahili teach a learner where things are — above, below, beside, between. This lesson covers nine spatial relationships, all built around a ball and a table. A learner who masters these nine phrases can describe the position of anything in a room.
The structure is consistent: mpira uko — the ball is — followed by the location and the reference object. Mpira uko juu ya meza — the ball is above the table. Mpira uko chini ya meza — the ball is under the table. Mpira uko kando ya meza — the ball is beside the table. The phrase ya meza (of the table) repeats across most entries, which means the variation is concentrated in the location word — juu, chini, kando, nyuma, mbele, kati, ndani.
Two entries share the same Swahili form: mpira uko juu ya meza appears for both "above" and "on the table." The distinction in English between above and on is expressed differently in context in Swahili — the word juu covers both, and speakers rely on situation to clarify.

Location phrases in Swahili connect to places in Swahili — both lessons use locative structures, and the -ni suffix from the places lesson appears in the locations lesson too through nyumbani and other locative forms. A learner who has worked through places will find the location phrases easier to hold.
Use one phrase when it matches what you see. Put a ball on the table: mpira uko juu ya meza. Move it under: mpira uko chini ya meza. Move it behind: mpira uko nyuma ya meza. The child sees the position change and hears the new word. The physical demonstration is more effective than repetition alone.

Naomi, a native Swahili speaker, recorded every phrase in this lesson. Her recordings make the ya meza linking pattern audible — the genitive connection sounds fluid in natural speech and more formal when read word by word. Hearing the whole phrase before saying it is the most effective way to learn location vocabulary in Swahili.
