Kitchen in Swahili

Kitchen words in Swahili are the names for the tools a family uses every day to cook and eat. This lesson covers 11 kitchen objects — from the sauce pan to the knife and fork — each recorded by a native speaker so the pronunciation is clear from the first use.

Some names carry a familiar shape: uma (fork), kisu (knife), bakuli (bowl). Others are distinctly Swahili and need to be heard: sufuria (sauce pan), kikaango (frying pan), kinu (mortar), mzani (scale). One word appears in two lessons: taulo (towel) is also a cloth used in the kitchen context here, but appears as a general household item in other settings. The object is the same; the context names the use.

Kijiko kikubwa (ladle) is a compound — kijiko is the word for spoon from the basics lesson, and kikubwa means large. That structure — base noun plus size modifier — is a productive pattern in Swahili kitchen vocabulary, and recognising it here makes other compound items easier to parse.

Kitchen vocabulary in Swahili connects to food in Swahili — the tools and the ingredients belong together. A learner who has covered food first will find the kitchen lesson easier because the context is already established. Sufuria becomes meaningful when nyama (meat) or maharagwe (beans) are going into it.

Name a kitchen tool when you pick it up or use it. Say sufuria when you put the pot on the stove, kisu when you reach for the knife, kijiko kikubwa when you stir the pot. The tools that appear at every meal — sufuria, kisu, uma, bakuli — are the ones to establish first. Kinu (mortar) and chujio (sieve) can wait for the right moment.

The full Swahili course adds pictures and a practice game for all 11 kitchen items, with progress tracking across sessions.

Audio recorded by Naomi, native Swahili speaker.

Naomi, a native Swahili speaker, recorded every word in this lesson. Her recording of kijiko kikubwa (ladle) shows how the size modifier kikubwa connects to the noun — the agreement between kijiko and kikubwa is audible in her recording and easier to hear than to deduce from the written form alone.
