Objects in Kirundi

Objects are the words a child can point at and hear named. This Kirundi vocabulary lesson covers 15 everyday objects — things around the house and the school bag — each recorded by a native speaker so the pronunciation is right from the start.

Some object names in Kirundi carry an echo of their origin: itelefone (phone), isaha (clock), ikaramu (pen). Others need to be heard before they can be read: urupfunguruzo (key), umuryango (door), idirisha (window). One pair to check: igikombe is the cup in this lesson; ikirahuri is the glass in the basics lesson. They are different objects with different Kirundi names — play both if your child already knows the basics words.

Lionel Kubwimana, a native Kirundi speaker from Bujumbura, recorded each word in this objects in Kirundi lesson. Play his audio before reading the word aloud to your child.

Point at an object in the room, play the recording once, ask for a repeat. One object a night is enough. The ones a child reaches for every day — ikaramu (pen), igitanda (bed), intebe (chair), umuryango (door) — are a good place to start because they come up without looking for them.

For the harder names, context helps: open the door and say umuryango, look out the idirisha (window), unlock with the urupfunguruzo (key). The borrowed names — itelefone, isaha, ikaramu — take less ear time; save it for the ones that look nothing like their English equivalent.

The premium course adds pictures and a practice game so a child can go through the vocabulary independently, with score tracking across sessions.

These are the objects a Kirundi-speaking family names at home and at school — not a dictionary, but the words that come up when a child asks what something is called. A parent who is not yet fluent can still use this lesson: pointing at the object and playing Lionel Kubwimana's recording does the teaching. This lesson is for any parent raising a child with Kirundi at home, wherever that home is.
