Food in Kirundi

Food words are some of the most useful vocabulary a child can have — they come up at every meal, at the market, and in conversation about the day. This food in Kirundi lesson covers 18 words, from staples like bread and rice to drinks like tea and coffee, each recorded by a native speaker.

Some names carry an echo from other languages: icayi (tea), ikawa (coffee), isupu (soup), isalade (salad). Others are distinctly Kirundi and need to be heard: amata (milk) and amazi (water) look similar on the page, but they sound different — play both back to back before using either with a child. One word not to confuse: ubugari is the thick bread made from flour, not umukate, which is the bread from the bakery.

Lionel Kubwimana, a native Kirundi speaker from Bujumbura, recorded each word in this Kirundi vocabulary lesson. His audio is especially useful for ubuki (honey) and umuceri (rice) — the stress falls differently than a reading would suggest.

One food word a night, used at the table, is enough. Name what is being served: amata when you pour milk, isupu when you serve soup, inyama when you put meat on the plate. The word means more when the food is right there.

The words that come up at every meal — amazi (water), amata (milk), umukate (bread), inyama (meat), igi (egg) — are the ones to teach first. The others — ubugari, igitumbura (doughnut), igisuguti (cookie) — can wait until they appear on the table.

The premium course adds pictures and a practice game so a child can go through all 18 food words independently, with score tracking across sessions.

These are the food words a Kirundi-speaking family uses at home — the names for what is on the plate, in the cup, and on the table. A parent who is not yet fluent can still use this lesson: name the food as you serve it, then play Lionel Kubwimana's recording so your child hears the correct form. This lesson is for any parent raising a child with Kirundi at home, wherever that home is.
