Counting in Kirundi

Counting in Kirundi is not just adding numbers — the word for one changes depending on what you are counting. This counting in Kirundi lesson teaches that pattern through five everyday objects: eggs, cows, cups, children, and bread. A parent who learns the pattern with one object can extend it to any noun.

The key insight is the agreement: igi rimwe (one egg), inka imwe (one cow), igikombe kimwe (one cup), umwana umwe (one child), umukate umwe (one bread). The number rimwe shifts its ending to match the noun. A child who hears this pattern at home — one cup, two cups — absorbs the agreement without being taught the rule explicitly.

Lionel Kubwimana, a native Kirundi speaker from Bujumbura, recorded every phrase in this lesson. The counting phrases are short enough to say with a child while setting the table or pouring a drink.

Start with one object and count up to five. Say the Kirundi phrase, play the recording, ask for a repeat. Cups at breakfast work well: igikombe kimwe, ibikombe bibiri, ibikombe bitatu. Eggs at cooking time are another natural moment. One object, one session — the pattern transfers.

The phrases in this lesson go up to five for each object. That covers most household counting. Children and bread (abana, imikate) use the same counting words as each other; cows (inka) and cups (ibikombe) share their own pattern. Noticing which words sound alike is part of the learning.

The premium course adds a practice game so a child can count independently, with score tracking across sessions.

This lesson teaches counting in context — not arithmetic, but the phrases a family uses when there are two of something or five of something at the table. A parent who is not yet fluent can still use it: set out the objects, say the Kirundi, play Lionel Kubwimana's recording, and count together. This lesson is for any parent raising a child with Kirundi at home, wherever that home is.
