Fruits in Swahili

Fruits in Swahili reflect the geography of East Africa — a mix of tropical abundance and trade-route vocabulary. This lesson covers 15 fruit names that a Swahili-speaking family would use at the market and at the table, each recorded by a native speaker.

Some names carry obvious echoes: nanasi (pineapple), papai (papaya), parachichi (avocado). Others are distinctly Swahili and need to be heard before they make sense: embe (mango), ndizi (banana), limao (lemon). One distinction worth flagging early — ndizi is the ripe yellow banana in this lesson; in the vegetables lesson, ndizi mbichi is the unripe green banana used in cooking. Same fruit, different stage, different word.

The more unusual entries — tini (figs), masongwe (physalis), plamu la japani (japanese plum) — are less common at the table but appear at markets and in conversation often enough to be worth knowing. Tunda pesheni (passion fruit) is the longest entry and the most satisfying to say once the rhythm is clear.

This lesson pairs naturally with food in Swahili and vegetables in Swahili. A learner who has worked through food first will find the fruit vocabulary easier — many of the vowel patterns repeat, and the stress rules are identical.

Start with the fruits already in the bowl: embe, ndizi, chungwa (orange), nanasi. Those four alone cover most market conversations. The borrowed names — papai, nanasi, parachichi — are the lightest cognitive lift. Save listening time for pera (guava) and karanga (peanuts), neither of which resembles its English name.

The full Swahili course includes illustrated practice cards and a matching game with progress tracking across sessions.

Audio recorded by Naomi, native Swahili speaker.

Naomi, a native Swahili speaker, recorded every word in this lesson. Her pronunciation of matunda beri (berries) and tunda pesheni (passion fruit) is worth a close listen — multi-word entries have their own rhythm in Swahili, and the phrase flows differently than the individual words would suggest.
