Action Sentences in Swahili

Action sentences in Swahili bring together vocabulary from earlier lessons into complete phrases that describe real moments. This lesson covers 14 full sentences — a child climbing a tree, someone washing plates, children playing with a ball — each recorded by a native speaker.

The sentences build on what came before: vaileti anamenya ndizi mbichi (Vaileti is peeling a green banana) pulls ndizi mbichi from the vegetables lesson. Zemba ananunua taa (Zemba is buying a lamp) pulls taa from the basics vocabulary. Watoto wanacheza mpira (the children are playing with a ball) uses the plural subject watoto with its matching verb prefix wana-. A learner who recognises the pieces will start to see how Swahili sentences are assembled.

New verbs appear here that were not in the actions lesson: anapanda (climbing), anamsindikiza (accompanying), anainua (raising), anavua (fishing from). These verbs are longer and carry more specific meaning — they are worth a careful listen before being used.

Action sentences connect directly to actions in Swahili, which covers the same verb forms in shorter, single-action phrases. Working through actions first gives the ana- pattern before the full sentences add subjects, objects, and context.

Use these sentences when the moment matches. If children are playing with a ball, say watoto wanacheza mpira. If someone is washing dishes, say asha anaosha sahani. If someone is studying, say sada anasoma vizuri sana. The sentence is worth saying when the scene is already there — meaning and language arrive together.

Audio recorded by Naomi, native Swahili speaker.

Naomi, a native Swahili speaker, recorded every sentence in this lesson. Her recording of hawa anamsindikiza amina (Hawa is accompanying Amina) is worth a particular listen — the verb anamsindikiza is the longest in this lesson and carries a sound pattern that is easier to absorb through audio than through reading.
